OpenAI has made its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models available to ChatGPT users, marking a notable upgrade in its AI capabilities for coding, web development, and enterprise use. Previously accessible only through OpenAI’s API, GPT-4.1 is now rolling out to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team, while GPT-4.1 mini is available to both free and paid users.
The update replaces GPT-4.0 mini across ChatGPT, further streamlining OpenAI’s expanding model portfolio, which includes the GPT-4o series, o1-pro, and o3-mini variants.
Enterprise-Ready AI with Broader Coding Capabilities
GPT-4.1 builds on the architecture of GPT-4o but emphasizes improved coding benchmarks, higher accuracy, and better instruction following—key attributes for developers and enterprise teams. With support for a 1 million-token context window, it can manage large-scale software development tasks and long-form content creation with greater efficiency.
OpenAI reports that GPT-4.1 outperforms GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 in software engineering benchmarks. Unlike GPT-4.5, which emphasized general conversation and emotional nuance but fell short in math and coding, GPT-4.1 delivers a streamlined, precision-focused model for real-world deployment.

While GPT-4.5 remains the most multimodal and knowledge-rich, it has been criticized for high costs and inconsistent performance in technical domains. GPT-4.1, by contrast, offers reliability over breadth—positioning itself as the model of choice for serious software work.
Transparent Safety Commitments and New Evaluation Hub
The release also comes with a push for greater transparency. OpenAI launched a new Safety Evaluations Hub to share the results of its internal model safety testing more frequently. Despite criticism for launching GPT-4.1 without a dedicated safety report, the company maintains that the model doesn’t introduce new interaction modes or frontier-level intelligence, thus requiring different evaluation standards.
“GPT-4.1 doesn’t surpass o3 in intelligence,” said Johannes Heidecke, Head of Safety Systems at OpenAI. “But it builds on our previous safety mitigations and performs at parity with GPT-4o in our evaluations.”
Pricing and Competitive Landscape
On the API side, GPT-4.1 is priced at $2.00 per million input tokens and $8.00 per million output tokens, with discounts for cached tokens. GPT-4.1 mini is available at a significantly lower rate of $0.40 per million input tokens and $1.60 per million output tokens, offering a more cost-effective solution with scaled-down performance.
By comparison, Google’s Gemini Flash models start at just $0.075 per million input tokens, but they don’t match OpenAI’s precision and reliability in software development use cases. For organizations prioritizing instruction adherence and clean code generation, GPT-4.1 provides a more dependable option.

With OpenAI eyeing a $3 billion acquisition of AI coding startup Windsurf and competitors like Google racing to integrate Gemini with GitHub, the coding assistant market is heating up fast. GPT-4.1 arrives not as a flashy new frontier model but as a polished, ready-for-production tool for real-world tasks.
