Meta is reportedly developing a new AI-generated comment feature for Instagram, aiming to enhance user interaction on the platform. This move is part of the company’s broader effort to integrate artificial intelligence across its social media apps.

AI-Generated Comments: How It Works

Social media feature tester Jonah Manzano recently shared on X that a “Write with Meta AI” prompt has been spotted on Instagram. This tool will provide users with AI-generated suggestions for comments on posts, making engagement more seamless and interactive.

Users with access to the test feature will notice a pencil icon next to the comment bar under a post. Tapping this icon allows Meta AI to analyze the image and generate three suggested comments. For instance, if a photo features a person smiling with a thumbs-up in their living room, the AI might suggest comments such as “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.” If users are unsatisfied with the initial options, they can refresh to receive additional suggestions.

Meta’s Expanding AI Integration

A Meta spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company continues to test new AI-driven features across its platforms. “Outside of DMs, you will find Meta AI there for you in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to make your experiences more fun and useful,” the spokesperson said. However, Meta has not disclosed details regarding the potential rollout timeline or availability of the feature to a wider audience.

Meta previously experimented with AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, as part of its ongoing efforts to leverage AI in improving user engagement. While some users may appreciate the convenience of AI-suggested comments, others argue that such features dilute the authenticity of social interactions on Instagram. Many long-time users favor genuine, personal engagement over algorithm-generated responses.

Uncertain Future for AI Comments

As with any test feature, there is no guarantee that AI-generated comments will see a full release. Meta continues to gauge user response and refine its AI offerings accordingly. Whether this feature enhances user engagement or sparks backlash over authenticity concerns remains to be seen.
