Airbus’ commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation presents significant opportunities for Malaysia to strengthen its role in the future of green aviation. As the aircraft manufacturer plans to expand its operations and sourcing in Malaysia, local companies are well-positioned to integrate further into Airbus’ global supply chain, according to Malaysia’s ambassador to France, Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim.
In a recent meeting with Airbus Executive Vice-President International Wouter van Wersch, Eldeen highlighted that Airbus’ future business strategies are increasingly focused on sustainability, an area where Malaysia is poised to make important contributions. “Malaysia plays a vital role in Airbus’ global operations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific aerospace market, where it ranks third after China and India,” Eldeen said.

Malaysia’s Strategic Role in Airbus’ Global Supply Chain
Currently, about 50 Malaysian companies are part of Airbus’ supplier network, providing a range of aerospace parts and components. These include Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM), Spirit Aerosystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and SME Aerospace Sdn Bhd. Airbus maintains a significant presence in Malaysia, with over 280 commercial aircraft in service with Malaysian carriers, alongside both civil and military helicopters. Furthermore, close to 400 aircraft are on order for future delivery, underscoring Malaysia’s critical role in Airbus’ operations.
Eldeen also noted that Airbus is committed to expanding its supplier base in Malaysia, aiming to onboard more local companies in the coming years. This expansion is expected to boost Malaysia’s aerospace industry, contributing to the sector’s growth and technological development.
Upcoming Aircraft Deliveries
Malaysia Airlines is set to receive five Airbus A330neo aircraft by the first quarter of 2025, following the arrival of its first A330neo in October 2024. Meanwhile, AirAsia anticipates the delivery of five new Airbus A321neo aircraft by the end of this year, further strengthening Airbus’ footprint in Malaysia.
Expanding Connectivity Between Malaysia and France
In addition to Airbus’ expansion, Malaysia Airlines plans to expand its route to Paris, which is expected to significantly increase business flows and boost connectivity between Malaysia and France. Direct flights to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport from Kuala Lumpur International Airport will begin on March 22, 2025, operating four times a week. This new route will facilitate tourism, business travel, and official visits, particularly in light of Malaysia’s upcoming major events, such as the ASEAN Summit 2025, Visit Malaysia Year 2026, and the SEA Games 2027.
Ambassador Eldeen expressed optimism that the new route will help promote Malaysia as a business and tourism hub, strengthening ties between the two countries. With tickets priced at an introductory all-in return fare of RM3,699, the new service is expected to enhance Malaysia’s visibility on the global stage.
Airbus’ focus on sustainability and its plans to expand sourcing in Malaysia marks a promising avenue for local companies to integrate into green aviation. As Airbus deepens its presence in Malaysia and Malaysian airlines expand their fleets with Airbus aircraft, the country is set to play an increasingly important role in the global aerospace industry. The new direct flights to Paris will further enhance business opportunities and boost tourism, strengthening the bilateral relationship between Malaysia and France.
