WhatsApp, one of the world’s leading messaging platforms, is making strides into artificial intelligence (AI) with the development of new features that could transform user experiences. According to reports, the company is testing a dedicated AI tab and customizable AI characters in its Android beta version, adding a significant layer of functionality to its platform.

AI Characters and Customization

WhatsApp is developing a feature that allows users to create AI characters within the app. Using text prompts, users can define the personality traits, focus areas, and even the appearance of their custom chatbot avatars. This feature is reportedly similar to Meta’s AI Studio, already available on Instagram and Messenger.

Users will be able to:

  • Create AI avatars with unique bios and profile pictures.
  • Select personality traits and concentration areas for the chatbot.
  • Use the AI tab to manage public and user-generated bots.

A leaked screenshot suggests users can describe their chatbot’s personality in up to 1,000 characters and receive description suggestions to help craft engaging profiles.

Dedicated AI Tab

The new AI tab is expected to replace the existing Communities tab, although community functionality will remain streamlined under the Chats tab. The AI tab will prominently display popular public AI characters and user-created bots, making these tools more accessible than ever.

The feature aims to enhance user interaction by categorizing bots based on topics such as entertainment, assistance, and niche interests like pop culture.

Integration Across Meta’s Ecosystem

While it’s unclear whether WhatsApp’s AI characters will integrate seamlessly with Meta’s other platforms, the development aligns with Meta’s broader cross-platform strategy. Currently, Meta enables custom AI bot creation via Instagram’s AI Studio, and similar functionality is expected to be incorporated directly into WhatsApp.

Expanding WhatsApp’s Capabilities

The inclusion of AI-powered chatbots marks a significant evolution for WhatsApp, moving beyond its traditional messaging functionality. The platform is also testing features like:

  • Meta AI-powered search tools.
  • AI-generated stickers and images.

The new tools could position WhatsApp as a more dynamic and personalized app, catering to user needs for entertainment, productivity, and communication.

Global Rollout and Availability

Currently, these features are being tested in beta versions available to select users. The rollout is expected to be gradual, beginning in countries where AI tools are already available. Users can access the WhatsApp beta via the Google Play Store, although there is limited capacity for testers.

What’s Next for Users?

While the AI features are still in development, they represent WhatsApp’s commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. By incorporating AI-driven tools, WhatsApp could attract new users while retaining its massive global audience through engaging and personalized interactions.

The AI-enabled features are expected to become available in future updates, promising a new era of interaction and customization for WhatsApp users.
