Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, offering developers, startups, enterprises, and government entities the ability to run applications and serve users from AWS data centers within Malaysia. This move represents a significant milestone in Malaysia’s digital landscape and AWS’s continued expansion in Southeast Asia.

$6.2 Billion Investment Through 2038

AWS has committed to investing $6.2 billion in Malaysia over the next 15 years, with the construction and operation of this new region expected to add approximately $12.1 billion to Malaysia’s GDP by 2038. Additionally, AWS’s presence will support over 3,500 full-time jobs annually across external businesses during this period.

“The AWS infrastructure launch in Malaysia provides access to advanced technology for businesses and public entities, enhancing the country’s digital capabilities,” said Tengku Zafrul, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI). “This aligns with our New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which focuses on building a highly skilled, inclusive, and innovative economy.”

Advanced Cloud Infrastructure to Accelerate Digital Transformation

The AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region comprises three availability zones, designed for high availability and low latency. Each zone operates independently with separate power, cooling, and security, while maintaining seamless connectivity for resilience and optimal performance. This setup ensures that organizations can run their most demanding applications with robust disaster recovery options.

“The new AWS Region in Malaysia enables businesses across Asia Pacific to harness the full potential of the cloud,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, VP of Infrastructure Services at AWS. “With advanced services like AI, machine learning, and analytics, customers can now deploy sophisticated applications with high security and regulatory compliance.”

Boosting Malaysia’s Digital Economy

Malaysia is already home to a range of companies using AWS to innovate and scale globally. Major enterprises like PETRONAS, CelcomDigi, GXBank, and Bursa Malaysia are leveraging AWS’s infrastructure to enhance operations, drive sustainability, and enable financial inclusion. Startups like Aerodyne and Carsome are using AWS to rapidly scale their services across the region.

Bursa Malaysia, Malaysia’s national stock exchange, launched a Centralized Sustainability Intelligence (CSI) platform on AWS to support Malaysia’s transition to a lower-carbon economy. “AWS cloud infrastructure allows Malaysian companies to standardize ESG reporting and decarbonize their supply chains,” said Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, CEO of Bursa Malaysia.

Enabling a Future-Ready Workforce

Since 2017, AWS has trained over 100,000 Malaysians in cloud skills through initiatives like AWS Academy and AWS re/Start, which prepare students and professionals for cloud-related careers. Program AKAR, a collaboration with PayNet, focuses on bridging the digital skills gap by training entry-level talent in cloud services, ensuring Malaysia’s workforce is equipped to thrive in the digital economy.

Looking Ahead: Expanding AWS Infrastructure in ASEAN

AWS continues its investment in ASEAN, with plans to launch additional regions in Thailand and New Zealand by 2025. The expansion in Malaysia further strengthens AWS’s commitment to fostering digital innovation across Southeast Asia, enabling businesses to scale and adopt cutting-edge technologies.

AWS’s investment in Malaysia will not only enhance the country’s digital infrastructure but also position it as a regional hub for cloud innovation and digital transformation, creating significant economic benefits and driving sustained growth in the region.
