WhatsApp is making group chats more transparent with a new feature that shows how many people are typing at once — a small but meaningful upgrade for anyone juggling busy conversations.
Previously, group chat previews in WhatsApp would only display a single name when someone was typing a message. Now, users in supported beta versions will see real-time activity like “2 people typing…” or “3 people typing…” without having to open the chat. This added layer of visibility helps users gauge whether a conversation is still active or if they can safely step away and check back later.
The updated indicator is currently limited to typing activity. If multiple people are recording voice notes simultaneously, WhatsApp will still only display one name, as it has in the past.
Available Now for Android Beta Users
The new feature is rolling out to users running WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.20.17. WhatsApp confirmed it will expand access in future updates, though no timeline has been given for a full public release.

This tweak is especially helpful for high-volume group chats, where messages can pile up quickly. Seeing multiple users typing at once gives people contextual awareness — whether to jump in now or circle back later when the replies have landed.
More Features in the Works
The typing counter isn’t the only feature WhatsApp is testing. Other upcoming tools include:
- Draft Message List: A dedicated section in the Chats tab for viewing and managing unsent messages across conversations.
- Broadcast Credits for Businesses: A new system under development to allow businesses to send broadcast messages using prepaid credits — aimed at improving how businesses communicate with customers.
These changes are part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to streamline the user experience and make everyday communication more efficient, especially for power users and professionals managing large group discussions.
While modest on the surface, the new typing indicator offers practical value by helping users stay in sync with fast-moving conversations — no more guessing whether someone else is about to chime in.
